An Ontario school board trustee who was banned from attending all meetings between June and September 2022 is challenging the board\u2019s ban in court along with running for reelection this fall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mike Ramsay, a trustee of over 30 years from the Waterloo Region District School Board (WRDSB), said in a statement<\/a> that he has filed a \u201cNotice of Application for Judicial Review\u201d to challenge the WRDSB\u2019s \u201cunconstitutional behaviour\u201d in court, and that he is running for reelection \u201cto give parents, students and staff their voices back.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis nonsense must stop!\u201d he said. \u201cTrustees have a duty to secure the best public school experience for all children in this region, not silence different voices.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The WRDSB trustee board voted in June to ban Ramsay from meetings until Sept. 30 for breaching the Trustee Code of Conduct in a way that it would not disclose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The board said it learned of Ramsay\u2019s alleged breach in an anonymous \u201ccomplaint<\/a>\u201d filed in February 2022. However, in his statement, Ramsay said that his fellow trustee Laurie Tremble had filed it. \u201cTo this day, the Board is too embarrassed to publish the complaint, the Integrity Commissioner\u2019s report, or even the name of the Integrity Commissioner! It\u2019s effectively an admission that the six trustees and the complainant have something to hide,\u201d Ramsay said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIn my opinion, the Board\u2019s decision is unfair and the complaint has no merit. It also contravenes both my right to free expression under the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, and your rights as voters to fair and diligent representation on the Board,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ramsay also said in his statement that the WRDSB trustee board is full of members pushing for political ideologies instead of for their constituents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe majority of the current Board are sacrificing public interest in favour of a boutique ideology,\u201d he said. \u201cThey abused and weaponized the Board\u2019s rules to silence their opponents.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ramsay spoke out against the board back in January after a WRDSB teacher<\/a> who questioned the age-appropriateness of certain library books was barred from entering her school and ordered to work from home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The teacher, Carolyn Burjoski, voiced concerns that the books contained sexually explicit material.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ramsay supported Burjoski\u2019s motion that the board review the library books and criticised chair Scott Piatkowski for hastily silencing Burjoski.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe chair and majority of my colleagues have been exploiting for political gain the fears and concerns of not only our transgender friends and neighbours, but also friends and neighbours that are asking legitimate questions,\u201d Ramsey<\/a> told The Epoch Times in a previous interview.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
