(Indeed, as reported in the latest edition of&nbsp;<em>H&amp;D<\/em>, recently a supporter of incumbent \u2018centrist\u2019 President Emmanuel Macron sought to outflank Mme Le Pen and her&nbsp;<em>Rassemblement National<\/em> by portraying her as having a more moderate line on Islam than the French government.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Interior minister G\u00e9rard Darmanin \u2014 the same man who sought to outflank Marine Le Pen by positioning himself as even more anti-Islamic in last month\u2019s debate \u2014 began proceedings in that very same week to ban <em>G\u00e9n\u00e9ration Identitaire<\/em> for \u201cincitement to discriminate against a person or group because of their origin\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The banning order has now been confirmed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>G\u00e9n\u00e9ration Identitaire<\/em> has frequently gained media attention with stunts, beginning in 2012 when its activists occupied the roof of a mosque under construction in the city of Poitiers. In August 2019 three members were imprisoned for impersonating police officers during <em>G\u00e9n\u00e9ration Identitaire<\/em>\u2019s most successful stunt which involved blocking the Franco-Italian border on Alpine roads. https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/RZKu9GrjXpQ?feature=oembed<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Whereas Marine Le Pen and her group have concentrated on winning White working class support and have toned down explicit \u2018racism,\u2019 <em>G\u00e9n\u00e9ration Identitaire<\/em> support tends to come more from middle-class students: The organisation blatantly campaigns against a cultural and implicitly ethnic threat to French identity [though, to your editor\u2019s knowledge, they never publicly mention Jews as the main source of said threat \u2014 Ed.].<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The type of banning order being sought against <em>G\u00e9n\u00e9ration Identitaire<\/em> was most recently used in November 2020 against the French arm of the \u2018far right\u2019 Turkish paramilitary organisation Grey Wolves, who had been involved in militant anti-Armenian and anti-Kurdish campaigns, as well as conflict with the G\u00fclen movement, a controversial sect that was allegedly behind the 2016 coup attempt against Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdo\u011fan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\"><a href=\"https:\/\/nationalvanguard.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Generation-Identitaire.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/nationalvanguard.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Generation-Identitaire-750x499.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-53868\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The type of banning order being sought against <em>G\u00e9n\u00e9ration Identitaire<\/em> was most recently used in November 2020 against the French arm of the \u2018far right\u2019 Turkish paramilitary organisation Grey Wolves, who had been involved in militant anti-Armenian and anti-Kurdish campaigns, as well as conflict with the G\u00fclen movement, a controversial sect that was allegedly behind the 2016 coup attempt against Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdo\u011fan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Several French \u2018far right\u2019 groups have been banned in recent decades, including former paratrooper Mark Fredricksen\u2019s national socialist FANE, eventually banned for good in 1987; the PNFE, once closely linked to the Tyndall-era BNP and banned in 1999 after years of legal persecution; and the Third Positionist group&nbsp;<em>Unit\u00e9 Radicale<\/em>, banned in 2002.
