Allum Bokhari<\/a>1 Mar 2020700\t\t\t3:04\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n\n\n\n Researchers at USC used federal funds to \ncompile a \u201ccorpus\u201d of \u201chate speech\u201d on Gab, the First Amendment-friendly\n social media network that provides an alternative to increasingly \ncensorious platforms like Twitter and Facebook.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Titled \u201cThe Gab Hate Corpus: A collection of 27k posts annotated for \nhate speech,\u201d the project involved over a dozen researchers and was \nsponsored by funds from the National Science Foundation, a federal body \nthat distributes taxpayer money to fund scientific research, including \n\u201csocial sciences.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n The current NSF director is an Obama appointee, France A. C\u00f3rdova. The NSF\u2019s budget in 2020 was increased<\/a>\n by 2.5 percent on the previous year, to $8.28 billion. Part of that \ntaxpayer money, it seems, is now going to study \u201chate speech\u201d on Gab.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cThe growing prominence of online hate speech is a threat to a safe \nand just society,\u201d declares the study. \u201cThis endangering phenomenon \nrequires collaboration across the sciences in order to generate \nevidence-based knowledge of, and policies for, the dissemination of \nhatred in online spaces.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n The report also claims to \u201cestablish baseline classification \nperformance for each using standard natural language processing \nmethods.\u201d Natural language processing is a subfield of linguistics, AI \nand computer science that among other things involves training AIs how \nto recognize and analyze human speech.<\/p>\n\n\n\n In a statement, Gab slammed the researchers for \u201ccherrypicking\u201d items of speech from its website.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cThese researchers used federal funds to highlight 27,000 posts out \nof more than 93,000,000 on our site (0.029%) to promote the online \ncensorship of American citizens,\u201d said a Gab spokesman.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cGab has over 3 million visitors, users, and customers from around \nthe world. Our fastest-growing markets are the United States, India, and\n Spain. Our users have diverse ideological, cultural, and social \nperspectives. Studies like this seek to gaslight millions of great \npeople in our community based on a negligible fraction of posts on the \nsite.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cFor years now yellow journalists and shoddy researchers have \nconsistently cherry-picked individual users or small groups on our site \nin an effort to discredit our mission, which is to protect the First \nAmendment online and empower everyone to speak freely and securely.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cThey have failed and will continue to fail.
