A controversial board game called Secret Hitler was removed from \nthe shelves of three Montreal stores on Sunday after a complaint from \nB\u2019nai Brith Canada.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A member of the Jewish human rights group, \nwhich combats racism and anti-Semitism, contacted the Tour de Jeux \noutlet at the Fairview Shopping Centre in Pointe-Claire after reading \nposts on Facebook and receiving complaints from members of Montreal\u2019s \nJewish community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The game was developed in 2017 and is set in Germany in 1933 when Adolf Hitler came to power as chancellor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Players\n are secretly divided into two teams, liberals and fascists. The \nfascists sow distrust and try to install their leader. The liberals must\n find and stop the Secret Hitler before it\u2019s too late.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cAnything that depicts anything regarding Hitler is a very sensitive issue, especially with growing anti-Semitism throughout Canada<\/a>, the U.S. and around the world,\u201d said Harvey Levine, B\u2019nai Brith\u2019s regional director in Quebec.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWhen\n we receive complaints from the community, we have to respond. This is a\n sensitive issue with the Jewish population and with families of those \ninvolved in the Holocaust.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
After talking to Levine, the store \nmanager on the West Island contacted the owner, who decided the game \nwould no longer be sold at its three Montreal locations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201c(Levine)\n expressed his and the community\u2019s shock concerning the fact that the \ngame exists and that we would carry it,\u201d said the store manager, who \ndidn\u2019t want his name published. \u201cI\u2019m glad that he spoke to us directly.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The stores began selling the board game over the holidays after receiving requests from customers, the manager said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cBetween our three stores, many copies were sold,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The\n board game has been distributed worldwide through Amazon and there have\n been complaints from other Jewish groups in the U.S. and Australia, \nLevine said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
B\u2019nai Brith officials are assessing the situation before deciding whether to issue a formal statement, he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Sales\n of board games have increased over the past five years. Games such as \nSettlers of Catan, which emphasize strategy and co-operation, are \nincreasingly popular.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
