It is a grim, cramped, mean miserable form of tyranny. Jeff Jones is a popular, well-thought-of drama teacher at Toronto&#8217;s Oakwood Collegiate,. He handed out a page of sexual and racial jokes to his grade 9 and 10 drama class. Students in groups were to choose five of these jokes and develop them into a skit. These are jokes that are part of the students&#8217; world, however &#8220;inappropriate&#8221; &#8212; to use the politically correct catch-all denunciation &#8212; they might be. For thias, he was fired, as the<strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"> Toronto Star<\/span><\/strong> (March 6, 2013) reports:<\/span><\/p>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\">&#8220;An Oakwood Collegiate drama teacher who handed out seven pages of violent and racist jokes to his students as part of an assignment has been fired.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\">The Toronto District School Board confirmed Wednesday that <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thestar.com\/news\/gta\/2013\/03\/01\/teacher_sent_home_after_handing_out_shock_jokes_for_assignment.html\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Jeff Jones<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-size: large;\"> has been dismissed. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Jones was put on \u201chome assignment\u201d after parents complained he had distributed a handout filled with jokes about blondes, sexual violence and dead babies. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Trustee Maria Rodrigues, who oversees Oakwood, said Wednesday she \u201cfully supports the decision made by the board of trustees tonight to terminate Jeff Jones.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\">\u201cI am beyond disappointed that this occurred at Oakwood and that students were subjected to this inappropriate behaviour,\u201d she said. &#8230;<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\">The Star reported Jones handed out 100 jokes to his grades 9 and 10 students in early January and asked them to develop a comedy skit based on five jokes on the list.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Some parents were outraged by the assignment and complained; others thought the incident was blown out of proportion. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Ben Kutsyuruba, an expert in ethical and legal issues in the classroom at Queen&#8217;s University, said the jokes were \u201cvery explicitly inappropriate\u201d and breached the ethical standards enforced by the Ontario College of Teachers.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Reaction to Jones&#8217; dismissal was swift, with some former students and parents suggesting it was a loss to the school and education system. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\">\u201cI think it&#8217;s terrible,\u201d former student Samuel van Schaik Muir told the Star. The 23-year-old professional actor credited Jones with steering him into his chosen career. \u201cI just graduated from an acting program at the University of Windsor . . . and it was Mr. Jones himself who encouraged me to do it. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\">\u201cHe was a great drama teacher. Yes, of course his methods were controversial. But he had nothing but the utmost respect for his students.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Parent Helena Soukup, whose daughter took civics and drama with Jones, was shocked. \u201cThere has been a witch hunt to take him down for whatever reason,\u201d she said. \u201cHe&#8217;s one of the top two teachers my daughter has ever had. He&#8217;s a phenomenal human being.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Jones taught at Oakwood for eight years. Many of his students credit him with helping them win honours at the Sears Ontario Drama Festival for three years in a row.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Jeff Jones has been fired from his teaching job at Oakwood Collegiate after he handed out seven pages of blonde and dead baby jokes to students.\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thestar.com\/content\/dam\/thestar\/news\/gta\/2013\/03\/06\/oakwood_collegiate_teacher_fired_over_jokes\/jeff_jones.jpg.size.xxlarge.promo.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\">The Star didn&#8217;t publish any of the jokes, thus making it difficult for their readers to judge what the controversy was all about.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Jeff Jones grieved his firing, as the Toronto Star (March 7, 2013)reported: &#8221;\u00a0he Oakwood Collegiate Institute drama teacher fired for handing out violent or sexually graphic jokes about blondes and dead babies as homework isn\u2019t leaving quietly.<\/span><\/p>\n<div>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Jeff Jones, who was <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thestar.com\/news\/gta\/2013\/03\/06\/oakwood_collegiate_teacher_fired_over_jokes.html\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">dismissed by the Toronto District School Board on Wednesday evening<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-size: large;\">, will be lodging a grievance and already has <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thestar.com\/yourtoronto\/education\/2013\/03\/01\/students_rush_to_support_drama_teacher_sent_home_for_inappropriate_jokes.html\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">a group of past and present students clamouring for his reinstatement<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-size: large;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\">\u201cHe\u2019s the best teacher I\u2019ve ever had, hands down,\u201d said Kyra Soukup, a 16-year-old Grade 11 student who was in Jones\u2019 class this year. \u201cThe fact that he could get fired over something like this is ridiculous.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\">A 2011 Star investigation showed that some teachers found to have committed sexual misconduct weren\u2019t fired but transferred to other schools in a practice referred to as \u201cpassing the trash.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\">The Ontario Secondary School Teachers Federation confirmed that it would be filing a grievance with the board over Jones\u2019 firing.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\">\u201cWe\u2019re going to argue that it\u2019s excessive,\u201d said Doug Jolliffe, president of OSSTF District 12, which is representing Jones. If the grievance is turned down, the union can take the school board to labour arbitration, he said. &#8230;<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thestar.com\/news\/gta\/2013\/03\/01\/teacher_sent_home_after_handing_out_shock_jokes_for_assignment.html\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Jones was sent home with pay in January<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-size: large;\">, after a parent complained about seven pages of sexist and violent jokes she found in her child\u2019s backpack.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\">The decision to fire Jones was announced at Oakwood Thursday by principal Ellen Austrom.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Students have launched a petition on Change.org, called <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.change.org\/petitions\/keep-mr-jones-at-oakwood?utm_campaign=share_button_mobile&amp;utm_medium=facebook&amp;utm_source=share_petition\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Keep Mr Jones at Oakwood<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-size: large;\">, which had 172 signatures as of Thursday evening.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Several students told the Star that the offending assignment had been around for years and that the administration was aware of it but did nothing until they received the parent\u2019s complaint. &#8220;<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Political Correctness Rules &#8212; Toronto Teacher Fired for Handing Out &#8220;Inappropriate&#8221; Jokes Political correctness is Puritanism without God.
