86-YEAR-OLD ANTISEMITE CONVICTED AND ORDERED TO PAY \u00a3640 AFTER CALLING JEWISH BUSINESSMEN \u201cSHYLOCK\u201d <\/a><\/h1>\n

86-year-old\u00a0Herminio Martinez has been convicted\u00a0for racially aggravated threatening behaviour<\/a>\u00a0after launching into an antisemitic tirade on 8th February following a city planning meeting at which Jewish businessmen were permitted to construct a block of flats.<\/p>\n

Property developers Michael and Joseph Gerrard were leaving the city planning at\u00a0Haringey Civic Centre\u00a0when Mr\u00a0Martinez, who had opposed the planning application, called Michael Gerrard \u201cShylock\u201d, a reference to the Jewish moneylender in Shakespeare\u2019s play The Merchant of Venice<\/em> who famously demands a \u201cpound of flesh\u201d in settlement of a debt.<\/p>\n

Mr Martinez denied the offence, but the magistrates convicted him on the basis of\u00a0video footage of the aftermath of the incident filmed\u00a0on a smartphone, handing him\u00a0a 12-month conditional discharge and ordering him to pay \u00a3625 prosecution costs and a \u00a315 victim surcharge.<\/p>\n

We commend\u00a0the victims for taking action to ensure\u00a0that this racist was punished.<\/p>\n

Regrettably such convictions are rare due to reluctance on the part of the Crown Prosecution Service to take action against antisemites. While 2015 saw the worst level of antisemitic hate crime on record, we only know of 12 cases of antisemitic hate crime that the Crown Prosecution Service prosecuted, out of a total of 15,442 hate crimes prosecuted that year.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
