A 42-year-old man is facing several charges stemming from a hate crime investigation after hate-motivated signs were displayed in the window of a Winnipeg home.

On Sept. 8, police received multiple complaints about hate-motivated signs and a hate-motivated symbol being displayed from a home near the Polo Park mall, the Winnipeg Police Service said in a news release on Sunday.

The major crimes unit started investigating and identified a subject.

On Friday, investigators executed a search warrant at the home with the help of the tactical support team and arrested the suspect.

Michael Ryan Wallbank, 42, has been charged with four counts of willful promotion of hatred and one count of willful promotion of hatred (hate symbols).

He was detained in custody.

Gracie Garrett has lived in the neighbourhood for close to 10 years, and says it was “shocking” to see a swastika, along with other hateful rhetoric targeting ethnic and religious groups, in one of her neighbour’s windows.

“It just made me feel really uncomfortable,” said Garrett, who lives a couple of houses down the street.

“This is a pretty quiet neighbourhood, and we’re pretty close with our neighbours, and to know that someone who is … spreading such hate is, like, right there — it was pretty shocking to me,” she said.

She says she didn’t notice it at first, but when she went closer to the house, it left her with an “uneasy” feeling.

“It wasn’t, you know, coherent or anything like that, it was just some random hate speech things with that swastika right in the middle,” she said.

Garrett says she and her partner got home on Friday night and noticed a number of police cars parked up the street. She says knowing the police acted on this has everyone in the neighbourhood feeling a little bit safer.

“Once you’ve gotten to the point where you’re comfortable putting that kind of stuff out into the world, you don’t really know what else that person might do,” she said.

“Hopefully he learns from his mistakes, although I don’t know.”
