AntonacciReporter<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Seeing a poster advertising a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thespec.com\/news\/crime\/white-supremacists-hamilton-downtown\/article_34e455ae-b836-57d1-b0a7-9232c98e7a21.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">white nationalist group<\/a> in downtown Simcoe last week filled Josh Parsons with \u201cvisceral disgust.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI recognized the group immediately and thought, \u2018Oh jeez, this isn\u2019t good,\u2019\u201d said Parsons, a community organizer who has studied the rise of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thespec.com\/news\/hamilton-region\/white-supremacist-rally-city-hall-hamilton\/article_cef167ff-e7e7-5e66-a89c-5e5d5744c53f.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">far-right hate groups<\/a> in Canada.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The laminated poster bore the name and logo of the Dominion Society of Canada, an anti-immigrant group founded in 2025 that calls for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.antihate.ca\/remigration_white_nationalists_repackaging_ethnic_cleansing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201cremigration\u201d<\/a>&nbsp;\u2014 or mass deportation \u2014 of anyone not descended from Canada\u2019s original Anglo and French settlers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The group\u2019s website blames \u201cmass immigration\u201d for low wages, a lack of jobs and housing, and overstretched health-care and education systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cafe.nfshost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/image-85.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"4\" height=\"3\" src=\"https:\/\/cafe.nfshost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/image-85.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-11218\"\/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Some of the posters that appeared in downtown Simcoe promoting the Dominion Society of Canada co-opted historical images of Canadian soldiers from the First World War. Antonacci\/The Hamilton Spectator<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.antihate.ca\/white_nationalism_in_canada_organized_emboldened_and_growing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">report<\/a> from the Canadian Anti-Hate Network calls the Dominion Society the \u201cincorporated political arm\u201d of a white nationalist movement that includes Diagolon \u2014 a far-right extremist group that held a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thespec.com\/news\/hamilton-region\/haldimand-county-says-far-right-group-misrepresented-event-when-booking-rural-venue\/article_cac30387-8678-59b7-a21c-0735fc74baf2.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">rally in Jarvis<\/a> in 2024 \u2014 and the more \u201cmilitant\u201d Second Sons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dominion Society founder Daniel Tyrie \u2014 former executive director of the People\u2019s Party of Canada \u2014 rejects that characterization and says the group is \u201ca non-partisan advocacy group dedicated to promoting Canadian identity, heritage and nationalism.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But the anti-hate network maintains the Dominion Society is trying to get the idea of \u201cremigration\u201d into mainstream political discourse as what Parsons called \u201cthe suit-and-tie arm\u201d of Canadian white supremacy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Parsons ripped the poster off an electrical box on Robinson Street and scoured the downtown core in search of others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Not finding any, he hoped that was the end of it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But things \u201cescalated\u201d on April 27 when he discovered seven more Dominion Society posters pasted to utility poles near the Simcoe library, a hockey arena and the public high school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Parsons believes the group is using the posters to recruit new members.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThese groups particularly focus on communities they perceive to be struggling. And they specifically target young men and boys with the intent of radicalizing them toward their hate-based ideology,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some of the posters \u2014 which The Spectator has seen \u2014 feature what appear to be historical photographs of Canadian soldiers during the First World War and the Latin phrase \u201cPopulus Noster, Domus Nostra,\u201d which translates to \u201cour people, our home.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTo have people use Canadian heroes who quite literally fought directly against what this group is preaching \u2026 they\u2019re really flattening Canadian identity,\u201d Parsons said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThey completely ignore the genocide of the First Nations people and describe themselves as \u2018heritage Canadians.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Standing against racism<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Masked groups of white nationalists held demonstrations in downtown Hamilton and London in recent months, while <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/Winnipeg\/comments\/1sp7uxv\/taking_out_the_trash\/?solution=09d33829a96c156509d33829a96c1565&amp;js_challenge=1&amp;token=bbbe4bf1c9a2b5160829c4be34da58610d0eb8d7704697dab2e42aef97238c34&amp;jsc_orig_r=\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">posts<\/a> on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/stcatharinesON\/comments\/1qlzxar\/more_white_supremacist_posters\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Reddit<\/a> indicate Dominion Society posters were spotted \u2014 and taken down \u2014 in Winnipeg and the Niagara region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m appalled that this rhetoric is rearing its ugly head in our community,\u201d Norfolk County councillor Kim Huffman told The Spectator.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cPreying on vulnerable members of our community shows that these groups who preach hate, violence racism and intolerance know that the majority of Canadians do not support them,\u201d Huffman said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI am vehemently opposed to everything they stand for and will use my voice to protect our community.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Const. Andrew Gamble of Norfolk County OPP&nbsp;said while it may not be a criminal offence to put up posters, depending on their content and location, the police service \u201cencourages community members to promote respect and understanding, both in person and online.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gamble told The Spectator the OPP \u201cremains committed to the safety and well-being of all individuals in Ontario, regardless of race, ancestry (or) place of origin.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He invited residents to report hate-motivated or discriminatory incidents to the police or Crime Stoppers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Parsons and fellow Simcoe resident Andrew Peach said they did not hesitate to cut down the \u201cdetestable\u201d posters and are ready to act should more turn up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThey have to engage in these clandestine, in-the-shadows acts in order to recruit,\u201d Parsons said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSo the less time that these posters stay visible in the community, the less effective they are. And it\u2019s my full intent to make it not worth their time to come here.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Peach said standing against hateful ideology should not be a partisan issue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf you don\u2019t take action, it festers. You have to show them that the community will not stand for this,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt doesn\u2019t matter if you sit on the right or the left or smack dab in the middle.
