The handbook, set to be formally\u00a0 launched later this week<\/a>\u00a0under the title \u201cUnderstanding Antisemitism in Australia,\u201d explicitly conflates antisemitism and antizionism with statements like\u00a0\u201cAntisemitism and antizionism are both expressions of hatred towards Jews\u201d\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>and asserting that it is antisemitic to accuse Israel of\u00a0\u201capartheid, oppression, racism and genocide.\u201d<\/strong><\/em>It is therefore unambiguously the official position of the Australian government\u2019s appointed authority on antisemitism that it is hateful and abusive toward Jews and their religion to oppose the\u00a0racist political ideology<\/a>\u00a0underpinning the modern state of Israel.

So when Australians hear Jillian Segal and government officials talking about how there\u2019s been an increase in \u201cantisemitism\u201d in our country and saying extreme measures must be taken to stop it, it\u2019s important to be clear that this is the \u201cantisemitism\u201d they are talking about. Let\u2019s go through the handbook together and highlight some revealing excerpts, shall we?The forward in the handbook stresses the importance of the Australian government\u2019s endorsement of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA)\u00a0 working definition of antisemitism<\/a>, which has been\u00a0 opposed around the world<\/a>\u00a0for its conflation of criticism of Israel with hateful actions toward Jews. Under the IHRA definition it is considered antisemitic to claim that Israel is a racist endeavor, or to compare Israel\u2019s abuses to those of Nazi Germany\u200a\u2014\u200aboth of which are entirely legitimate criticisms which should be put forward far more often than they are. Much of the handbook follows from the premises of the IHRA definition.Segal\u2019s office states that the handbook\u00a0\u201cis intended as a practical resource for schools, universities, public servants, community organisations and anyone seeking to understand antisemitism today.\u201d<\/strong><\/em>

Segal\u2019s office says that antisemitism\u00a0\u201cmorphs\u201d<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0over the ages, from the blood libels and \u201cChrist-killer\u201d accusations of the Middle Ages to the racism of Nazi Germany, and has now morphed so that\u00a0\u201cantisemitic tropes are conveyed and justified in the language of human rights and international legal arguments.\u201d\u201cFor example, sometimes Jews are labelled and libelled as \u2018settler-colonialists\u2019, \u2018oppressors\u2019, and a symbol of a global system of domination that \u2018can seemingly accommodate even the murder of Jews as Jews\u2019,\u201d<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0the envoy proclaims.Do you see how the subject was moved to lump medieval superstitions about Jews in with entirely legitimate criticisms of the modern state of Israel? According to Australia\u2019s Special Envoy to Combat Antisemitism, criticising Israel using \u201clanguage of human rights and international legal arguments\u201d is not meaningfully different from saying that Jews drink the blood of Christian children.This, clearly, is stark raving insanity.<\/a>

\u201cLegitimate criticism of Israel is not antisemitic,\u201d<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0the envoy concedes, then proceeds to completely negate this concession with everything that follows.\u00a0\u201cHowever, there are many examples of antisemitic imagery, tropes, conspiracy theories and propaganda (echoing medieval myths) that have found their way into anti-Israel discourse. It is also increasingly common for the word \u2018Zionist\u2019 (or iterations of it) to be used as cover or proxy for \u2018Jew \u2019.\u201d<\/strong><\/em>This is completely made up. The claim that critics of Israel\u2019s abuses use the word \u201cZionist\u201d when they really mean \u201cJew\u201d is just something Israel apologists started asserting with no substantiation whatsoever a few years ago. They have no evidence for this assertion apart from the frequency and forcefulness which with they assert it.The envoy defines Zionism as\u00a0\u201cthe belief that the Jewish people have the right to self-determination within their ancestral homeland,\u201d<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0which is misleading at best. That\u2019s not what Zionism is. Zionism is what we see before us today. The genocide, apartheid, ethnic cleansing and nonstop war and abuse. That\u2019s what Zionism is, as evidenced by material reality. The best definition of Zionism is its real-world manifestations. Zionism is what it looks like when you give the Zionists everything they want.

\u201cA new variant of antisemitic atrocity denial emerged in the wake of the 7 October 2023 Hamas terrorist attacks\u200a\u2014\u200athe deadliest day for Jewish people since the Holocaust,\u201d<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0the envoy writes.\u00a0\u201cDisturbingly, these atrocities have been met by some with denial, minimisation, justification and distortion\u200a\u2014\u200aechoing Holocaust denial, minimisation, and distortion.\u201d<\/strong><\/em>Segal\u2019s office is here telling us that it is antisemitic to talk about the\u00a0glaring plot holes<\/a>\u00a0in the narratives about\u00a0 mass rapes<\/a>,\u00a0 beheaded babies<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0 babies cooked in ovens<\/a>\u00a0on October 7, or to talk about the large number of Israelis who were\u00a0 killed by IDF fire<\/a>\u00a0under the Hannibal Directive, or to \u201cjustify\u201d the attack by pointing out the\u00a0 monstrous Israeli abuses<\/a>\u00a0which gave rise to it.<\/a>The envoy writes of the importance of\u00a0\u201cStanding firm against antisemitism parading as \u2018anti-racism\u2019,\u201d<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0stressing the IHRA position that framing Israel as a racist endeavor is hateful toward Jews. A flyer saying\u00a0\u201cWe don\u2019t want your two states. We want all of 48\u201d<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0is labeled\u00a0\u201cantisemitic, because there is only one Jewish country.\u201d<\/strong><\/em>Segal\u2019s office warns of the dangers of\u00a0\u201cHolocaust inversion,\u201d<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0which is when\u00a0\u201cIsrael and Jews are portrayed as Nazi-like perpetrators of mass atrocities and genocide,\u201d\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>which is bad because it\u00a0\u201cserves to demonise and delegitimise Israel, Israelis and Jews.\u201d<\/strong><\/em>To be clear,\u00a0every relevant humanitarian institution on earth<\/a>\u00a0has said that Israel is guilty of genocide in Gaza. It is a thoroughly established and entirely indisputable fact. Australia\u2019s Special Envoy to Combat Antisemitism is saying that facts are antisemitic.<\/a>Some examples cited in the handbook of glaring instances of the antisemitic crime of \u201cHolocaust inversion\u201d:\u200a\u2014\u200aPlacards of \u2018 Well done Hitler would be proud\u2019 and \u2018Same shit Different asshole\u2019, the latter with images of Hitler and Netanyahu, both placards making Nazi analogies to Israel.\u200a\u2014\u200aThree banners of Hitler removing his mask , revealing the face of Netanyahu, making an analogy between Nazism and Israel, on major roads.\u200a\u2014\u200aGraffiti of a Star of David, equal sign, and Nazi swastika , and another graffiti of \u2018End the Genocide\u2019 on a main road.<\/strong><\/em>We\u2019re meant to believe it should be a hate crime to say the state that\u2019s waging multiple wars of aggression while mass murdering people because of their ethnicity bears some resemblance to another state which did these things. I don\u2019t know about you, but I find that silly.Australia\u2019s \u201cantisemitism envoy\u201d claims it is antisemitic to say the IHRA definition of antisemitism silences criticism of Israel, arguing that\u00a0\u201cclaims that the leading global definition of antisemitism\u200a\u2014\u200awhich reflects the lived experience of Jewish people worldwide\u200a\u2014\u200ais designed to intentionally silence criticism echoes antisemitic tropes of Jewish power and control.\u201d<\/strong><\/em>That\u2019s right kids: you can\u2019t criticise Israel because that\u2019s antisemitic, and if you complain that your speech is being suppressed, that\u2019s antisemitic too.<\/a>The handbook includes a hypothetical office group chat with a coworker making the statement\u00a0\u201cBut what about the genocidal, racist Zionist project that has oppressed the Palestinians? Zionism is a supremacist ideology invented by Theodore Herzl. They\u2019ve done this through apartheid and ethnic cleansing.\u201d\u201cThis is antisemitic,\u201d<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0the handbook argues, dismissing the entirely accurate statement as\u00a0\u201cSoviet-era antizionist propaganda\u201d\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>and saying it\u00a0\u201cwas antisemitic because it included statements that accused Israel of apartheid, oppression, racism and genocide.\u201d<\/strong><\/em>Saying it\u2019s antisemitic to accuse Israel of apartheid, oppression, racism and genocide is as clear an admission that Segal\u2019s goal is to stomp out all criticism of Israel as you could possibly ask for.If that wasn\u2019t clear enough for you, the handbook concludes with the assertion that it is impossible to separate antizionism from antisemitism:\u201cTrying to separate \u2018antisemitism\u2019 from \u2018antizionism\u2019 ignores the history of misinformation, disinformation and antisemitic propaganda that has shaped narratives about Israel and Zionism,\u201d<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0the envoy asserts.\u00a0\u201cIt also ignores the lived and practical reality that wherever these antizionist narratives have been propagated, it has resulted in discrimination, harassment , vilification, hate and harm towards Jews. For example, Poland\u2019s 1968 antizionist campaign resulted in expulsions and forced emigration of thousands of Jewish Poles.\u201d\u201cAntisemitism and antizionism are both expressions of hatred towards Jews,\u201d<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0the handbook concludes.So there you have it.
