The mayor and police in Hamilton have decided that some Cana\u00addians have the wrong kind of opin\u00adions and should not be allowed to rent pub\u00adlic facil\u00adit\u00adies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Last week, Hamilton Mayor Andrea Hor\u00adwath declared the Domin\u00adion Soci\u00adety is not entitled to rent city-owned prop\u00aderty to hold a con\u00adfer\u00adence. The pre\u00addict\u00adable res\u00adult was to force the group to seek a private venue in which to hold its meet\u00ading.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Hamilton Police Ser\u00advice then diver\u00adted some of its stretched resources to imped\u00ading the efforts of the Domin\u00adion Soci\u00adety, issu\u00ading a polit\u00adical state\u00adment denoun\u00adcing it as \u201cdivis\u00adive and exclu\u00adsion\u00adary,\u201d and as neg\u00adat\u00adively impact\u00ading \u201cthe sense of safety and belong\u00ading within our com\u00admunity.\u201d The police even asked the pub\u00adlic to con\u00adtact them with inform\u00ada\u00adtion about any efforts the group might make to secure a venue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hamilton\u2019s police and mayor are behav\u00ading much like Que\u00adbec\u2019s former tour\u00adism min\u00adis\u00adter, Car\u00adoline Proulx. In 2023, she ordered the Centre des congr\u00e8s de Qu\u00e9bec, which is owned by a Crown cor\u00adpor\u00ada\u00adtion, to can\u00adcel its con\u00adtract with Har\u00advest Min\u00adis\u00adtries to hold a Chris\u00adtian con\u00adfer\u00adence. The sole reason for can\u00adcel\u00adling the con\u00adtract was that Proulx vehe\u00admently dis\u00adagreed with the Chris\u00adtian group\u2019s beliefs about abor\u00adtion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Super\u00adior Court of Que\u00adbec recently ruled Proulx had abused her author\u00adity and viol\u00adated the Charter-pro\u00adtec\u00adted free\u00addom of expres\u00adsion of Har\u00advest Min\u00adis\u00adtries. The court awar\u00added gen\u00aderal and pun\u00adit\u00adive dam\u00adages to Har\u00advest Min\u00adis\u00adtries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Domin\u00adion Soci\u00adety describes itself as \u201cded\u00adic\u00adated to pro\u00admot\u00ading Cana\u00addian iden\u00adtity, her\u00adit\u00adage and nation\u00adal\u00adism.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It advoc\u00adates for remig\u00adra\u00adtion: send\u00ading immig\u00adrants back to their coun\u00adtries of ori\u00adgin. Neither Hamilton\u2019s mayor nor its police force have accused it of being viol\u00adent, crim\u00adinal or ter\u00adror\u00adist. It there\u00adfore has the same right as every other non-profit in Canada to oper\u00adate peace\u00adfully within the law, and to advoc\u00adate for its beliefs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Polls have shown roughly half of Cana\u00addians believe immig\u00adra\u00adtion levels are too high. Let\u2019s say for argu\u00adment\u2019s sake only eight per cent of Cana\u00addians sup\u00adport remig\u00adra\u00adtion, and 92 per cent oppose it. Should hav\u00ading only eight per cent sup\u00adport for your opin\u00adion mean los\u00ading your right to rent gov\u00adern\u00adment-owned facil\u00adit\u00adies, and to use pub\u00adlic spaces like parks and side\u00adwalks?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If yes, then no gov\u00adern\u00adment facil\u00adit\u00adies should be avail\u00adable for rental by the NDP, which garnered only 6.3 per cent of the pop\u00adu\u00adlar vote in Canada\u2019s most recent fed\u00aderal elec\u00adtion. Almost 94 per cent of Cana\u00addians rejec\u00adted the NDP in 2025. Yet the NDP is not dis\u00adqual\u00adi\u00adfied from being able to exer\u00adcise its Charter freedoms of expres\u00adsion, asso\u00adci\u00adation and peace\u00adful assembly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Politi\u00adcians and police officers have every right to express their polit\u00adical opin\u00adions for or against vari\u00adous groups and causes. At the same time, Canada\u2019s may\u00adors, cab\u00adinet min\u00adis\u00adters and police forces have no right to treat gov\u00adern\u00adment prop\u00aderty as though it were their own private prop\u00aderty, avail\u00adable only to \u201cgood\u201d people who have the \u201ccor\u00adrect\u201d polit\u00adical beliefs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Hamilton Police Ser\u00advice has a sol\u00ademn duty to fight crime. Its decision to waste its scarce resources on polit\u00adics is a betrayal of tax\u00adpay\u00aders and free cit\u00adizens alike. Indeed, unlike other pro\u00adfes\u00adsions, police have a legal duty to enforce the Crim\u00adinal Code, as well as numer\u00adous non-crim\u00adinal laws (such as traffic safety).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The politi\u00adciz\u00ada\u00adtion of the Brit\u00adish police should serve as a stark warn\u00ading to Cana\u00addians. What began with the mon\u00adit\u00ador\u00ading and record\u00ading of \u201cnon-crime hate incid\u00adents\u201d quickly led to Brit\u00adish cit\u00adizens being crim\u00adin\u00adally charged for what essen\u00adtially amoun\u00adted to thought crimes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Their crimes included shar\u00ading opin\u00adions about top\u00adics like immig\u00adra\u00adtion and trans\u00adgen\u00adder\u00adism. David Woot\u00adton was sen\u00adtenced to two years in prison for an \u201coffens\u00adive\u201d Hal\u00adloween cos\u00adtume. This is why police should be 100 per cent focused on fight\u00ading crime and zero per cent focused on polit\u00adics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If Canada is to remain a free soci\u00adety, the gov\u00adern\u00adment should uphold the law equally for all Cana\u00addians, includ\u00ading those who hold unpop\u00adu\u00adlar beliefs. Oth\u00ader\u00adwise, there will be little to sep\u00adar\u00adate us from Fas\u00adcist, theo\u00adcratic, Com\u00admun\u00adist or national social\u00adist regimes, under which the gov\u00adern\u00adment decides which views are cor\u00adrect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is why tax\u00adpayer-fun\u00added facil\u00adit\u00adies like con\u00adven\u00adtion centres, and pub\u00adlic spaces like side\u00adwalks and city parks, are \u2014 and must always be \u2014 avail\u00adable to all cit\u00adizens, regard\u00adless of their polit\u00adical beliefs.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
